March 6, 2008 - General Hospital Vienna of Vienna, Austria, successfully completed its first Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) treatment, reportedly one of the first to use this treatment option, designed to give simultaneous control of the linear accelerator gantry position, and speed the leaves and angle of the multileaf collimator and dose rate.
This system works to preserve healthy tissue around the target as well as reduce treatment times. The hospital used its existing Elekta Synergy S system to perform the VMAT treatment, along with the company’s linear accelerator control software. The VMAT solution also includes ERGO treatment planning system for rotational therapy and MOSAIQ image-enabled oncology Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system. This complete VMAT solution is now available in upgrades to existing Elekta accelerators.
