July 23, 2007 - Calypso Medical announced that it intends to interface the company's Calypso 4D localization system to Varian's treatment planning system and linear accelerators to support precise radiotherapy treatments for cancer patients.
The Calypso System will be interfaced with Varian's Eclipse in the initial product launch. Future products will be developed with a 4D integrated treatment console to give clinicians additional capabilities for patient positioning, motion management and tumor targeting. Calypso Medical intends to collaborate with Varian Medical Systems on patient positioning, motion management and tumor targeting solutions throughout treatment delivery.
The Calypso 4D localization system and implanted Beacon electromagnetic transponders are designed to provide an objective and continuous method to setup and continuously monitor the patient during radiation delivery. As highly-conformal radiation therapy treatment demands knowing the exact location of the target moment to moment, the Calypso System can work in tandem with Varian's On Board Imager and other product platforms to reportedly ensure that pinpoint accuracy is continuously maintained throughout the treatment process.
