February 9, 2007 - Integra LifeSciences Holdings Corporation announced today that its subsidiary, Integra Radionics, released its latest image registration software, ImageFusion 3, a new addition to its image fusion solutions that registers positron emission tomography (PET) images.
The software was developed for the precise registration of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) images, and now ImageFusion 3 enables automated image registration for PET, which is increasingly used to detect unusual metabolic activity indicative of an active growing tumor
"The ability to fuse PET images will allow us to see more of the tumor and improve our targeting of cancer in the brain and body," said Dr. Alirezza Kassaee, Ph.D., clinical associate professor of radiation oncology at the University of Pennsylvania. "I'm also very impressed with the new software's speed and accuracy."
When ImageFusion 3 software is used with Integra's XKnife radiosurgery system, the device reportedly more accurately targets and treats tumors using focused radiation beams from a linear accelerator. ImageFusion 3's increased speed is also beneficial when used in conjunction with the OmniSight image-guided system platform for the treatment of movement disorders.
