RSNA 2014: A Century of Transforming Medicine

By Melinda Taschetta-Millane

The 100th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) drew more than 50,000 professionals together at McCormick Place in Chicago this past week. Breaking news from approximately 20 scientific and exhibitor press conferences, more than 3,100 scientific presentations and posters covering the latest in radiologic research, and access to nearly 2,100 education exhibits and informatics demonstrations were featured during this week-long, milestone event.

The society named Ronald L. Arenson, M.D., FACR, president of the RSNA board of directors. He is the Alexander R. Margulis Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco, where he has been since 1992. As president, Arenson will focus on the importance of patient-centered care and radiology’s evolution from volume- to value-based practice.

Richard L. Baron, M.D., FACR, was named president-elect. He is professor of radiology at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he has been since 2002, serving as chair of the Department of Radiology from 2002 to 2011 and dean for clinical practice from 2011 to 2013. As president-elect, he will continue to place a priority on organization and optimization of RSNA’s educational offerings.

The results of several significant studies were presented during the meeting, including research on the national headline-worthy topics of brain imaging and dense breast tissue. Summaries of these studies can be found at www.itnonline.com.

The two main exhibit halls at McCormick Place featured the very latest in trends and technology. ITN editor Dave Fornell and contributing editor Greg Freiherr recap some of the stand-out technology from the show floor in ITN’s RSNA Editor’s Choice video, along with other trend videos from the show floor. In addition, ITN discussed the recent trends and advances in breast imaging at RSNA 2014 with Laurie Fajardo, M.D., MBA chief of breast imaging, University of Iowa.

Just a few of the exhibit hall’s highlights are featured below. Descriptions of more than 300 products presented at RSNA can also be found on our FastPass website channel, www.itnonline.com/rsna-fastpass.
