June 28, 2012 — When a newly diagnosed cancer patient is considering treatment options, proton therapy might not be the first course that comes to mind. Yet over the past two decades proton therapy has continued to evolve as a viable alternative to chemotherapy and a less-invasive procedure than radiation or surgery, so much so that proton therapy is now considered the preferred course of treatment for many doctors and patients in the fight against cancer.

June 28, 2012 — MRI Interventions, Inc. and Brainlab AG today announced an alliance with Tocagen Inc. in the fight against the most aggressive form of brain cancer, recurrent high grade gliomas including glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Under the arrangement, MRI Interventions’ clearpoint neuro intervention system will be utilized at selected sites in Tocagen’s ongoing investigational clinical trial for the delivery of Toca 511 into brain tumors under real-time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guidance.

June 27, 2012 — Three Palm Software, a global supplier of mammography visualization and computer-aided diagnosis software, announced that that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted Three Palm Software a new patent, US Patent 8,184,890.

June 25, 2012 — KLAS released the 2012 Best in KLAS Awards: Medical Equipment and Infrastructure report, which details what end-users think about imaging systems from specific vendors. The report recognizes leaders in individual medical equipment market segments as Best in KLAS, including digital X-ray, CT, MRI (1.5T and 3.0T), ultrasound and mammography.

June 25, 2012 — A study (Smith-Bindman et al) to be published in the upcoming Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) underscores that medical imaging use is down in the last several years, but includes information on current use of scans and their beneficial impact that may be incomplete, incorrect or easily misunderstood.
