Philips announced that it will feature the company’s latest magnetic resonance (MR) solutions and neurology-focused clinical applications at the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine’s (ISMRM) 25th annual meeting and exhibition, April 22-27 in Hawaii. As part of its newest suite of MR-based software applications dedicated to neurology, Philips will be showcasing MultiBand SENSE, which was developed in collaboration with several partners, including the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont.

The latest in a series of studies led by researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine shows that addition of a widely available, noninvasive imaging test called 99mTc-sestamibi SPECT/CT to CT or MRI increases the accuracy of kidney tumor classification. The research team reports the potential improvement in diagnostic accuracy will spare thousands of patients each year in the United States alone from having to undergo unnecessary surgery.

A multidisciplinary clinical team at Nicklaus Children's Hospital used magnetic-resonance guided focused ultrasound – a form of incisionless surgery – to ablate a centrally located brain tumor in a young patient experiencing tumor-associated seizures. The first-of-its-kind procedure is part of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved research study designed to demonstrate the safety and feasibility of focused ultrasound for the treatment of benign intracranial tumors in children and young adults between 8 and 22 years of age.
