Researchers have developed a new imaging agent that could help guide and assess treatments for people with various neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis. The agent, which is used in positron emission tomography (PET) scans, targets receptors in nerve cells in the brain that are involved in learning and memory. The study is featured in the April issue of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

Accuray Inc. and Erasmus MC announced the first patient has been successfully treated using an online-adaptive (OA) approach together with the CyberKnife System. The patient, treated for oligometastases in the pelvic region, is part of a new clinical trial conducted at Erasmus MC, the largest university medical center in the Netherlands, evaluating OA stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) delivered by the CyberKnife platform. The trial brings the hospital one step closer to its goal of providing individual, personalized medicine.

New American College of Radiology (ACR) and Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) breast cancer screening guidelines are the first to recognize that African-American women are at high-risk for the disease and should be screened as such. The ACR and SBI now call for all women to have a risk assessment at age 30 to see if screening earlier than age 40 is needed. The societies also newly-recommend that women previously diagnosed with breast cancer be screened with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) issued an update to its clinical guideline for the use of palliative-intent radiation therapy for patients with incurable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Reflecting new evidence from randomized clinical trials, the guideline now recommends the addition of concurrent chemotherapy to radiation therapy for certain patients with incurable stage III NSCLC, including those who are able to tolerate chemotherapy and have a life expectancy longer than three months.

Optical mammography (OM), which uses harmless red or infrared light, has been developed for use in conjunction with X-rays for diagnosis or monitoring in cases demanding repeated imaging where high amounts of ionizing radiation should be avoided. At the OSA Biophotonics Congress: Biomedical Optics meeting, held April 3-6 in Hollywood, Fla., researchers from Milan, Italy, will report an advance in instrument development that increases the sensitivity of OM by as much as 1,000-fold.
