Exo Imaging Inc. announced a $35 million Series B financing round for its high-performance ultrasound platform based on piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (pMUT) and artificial intelligence (AI) for imaging and therapeutic applications.

Philips announced that Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TPVGH) will utilize the Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution to transform its pathology tissue examination to digital diagnostics. By allowing tissue samples to be remotely viewed within a virtual pathology network across hospital locations, the Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution will help TPVGH to establish Taiwan’s first fully digitalized pathology department, with the aim of enhancing patient safety and improving the quality of diagnoses, thereby leading to better patient outcomes.

Aided by a high-powered brain scanner and a 3-D printer, National Institutes of Health (NIH) researchers peered inside the brains of hundreds of multiple sclerosis patients. The researchers found that dark rimmed spots representing ongoing, “smoldering” inflammation, called chronic active lesions, may be a hallmark of more aggressive and disabling forms of the disease.

Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami celebrated the opening of two newly renovated cardiac catheterization suites during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 19, 2019. The suites feature the new Alphenix Core+ from Canon Medical Systems, which provides diverse imaging without compromising image quality or performance. Jackson Memorial is the first hospital in Florida offering this new technology.

Physicians at the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Clinical Cancer Center in Milwaukee have treated the first cancer patient in the world using Accuray’s Radixact System with Synchrony motion tracking and correction technology. The patient was a 45-year-old man with lung cancer. With the addition of Synchrony, the Radixact System was able to track the lung tumor in real time as it moved with the patient's breathing and automatically adjust the radiation beam to keep it targeted on the tumor. This enabled the clinical team to deliver the maximum dose of radiation they felt necessary to destroy cancer cells, while minimizing the risk of damage to surrounding healthy tissues. The Radixact and CyberKnife systems both feature the Synchrony automated motion tracking and correction functionality.

Healthcare data breaches are currently being reported at a rate of more than one a day, according to a new report from the nonprofit Institute for Healthcare IT (IHIT). And for those who think it can’t happen to them, the odds are not in their favor. Breaches reported between 2009 and 2018 have resulted in the theft or exposure of almost 190 million healthcare records, a number equal to 59 percent of the U.S. population, according to the HIPAA Journal.
