Abnormalities in the prefrontal cortex and related brain areas are observed in adolescents who have attempted suicide, according to a report presented at the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. The study suggests that deficits in frontal systems may be associated with risk for suicide attempts in youths with mood disorders.

There were a few intriguing technology trends at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) 2014 meeting that shine a light on what the future of imaging holds. Among these are: touchscreen operation ultrasound systems; use of pocket ultrasound and app-based ultrasound technology that allows use of a smartphone or tablet as point-of-care imaging system; tracking systems to automatically record and report on radiation dose and contrast media used on each patient; and a movement away from traditional PACS and CVIS silos to a new concept of enterprise imaging.

Nuance Communications Inc. announced that the American College of Radiology (ACR) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) will leverage the Nuance PowerShare Network, a cloud-based medical imaging exchange. These organizations are among the first to join Nuance’s PowerShare Innovation Program, which opens up the entire network platform to third parties to leverage PowerShare and Nuance PowerScribe reporting through a cloud model to deliver clinical content and value-added services to a much wider audience.

Medical Imaging is a profit center for most healthcare providers and has historically been the hot bed for technology advancement and innovation.
